The sign was damaged on the property of Masjid Fatima Al-Zahra Mosque, located at 55 Lake Shore Road in Ronkonkoma, at about midnight on Monday, July 4, according to a report from the Suffolk County Police Department on Monday, July 25.
Police said the device was either thrown at the sign or placed near it.
SCPD said the building was not damaged, and no one was injured.
Suffolk County Crime Stoppers and Suffolk County Police Hate Crimes Unit and Arson Section detectives are investigating the case.

Authorities asked anyone who was in the area, including the Lt. Michael Murphy Memorial Park, between 10 p.m. on Sunday, July 3, and midnight on Monday to call police.
A Crime Stoppers fast cash reward of up to $5,000 will be offered within seven days of an arrest.
